Thanks to the unseasonably warm fall and early winter, my winter boot tests for The Wirecutter, which require sub-zero temperatures to sort out, happened later than usual. Long-story-short, my partner and I drove to Canmore, Alberta. At the time, the town's overnight temperature was the coldest we could find within a two hour drive from our home.
Thanks to the hospitality of the town's Royal Canadian Mountain Police detachment, we were safely able to test this year's pile of boots in the dead of night, surrounded by the mountains, stars and the occasional cop who hadn't gotten the memo on what we were up to that evening.
The update to the guide is in final edits right now and should be posted to The Wirecutter soon.
