While most modern smartphones come with an app that'll allow you to record audio notes right on to your handset, the sound quality is lousy, they don't deal well with audio sources that are more than a few feet away and recording your thoughts, lecture notes or a meeting is just one more task that'll take a bite out of your phone's already overtaxed battery. As such, I think it's safe to say that, for some people, investing in a dedicated audio recorder is a pretty good idea.
